Anyone have the mulching kit for Max 26xl MMM?
I’m debating whether or not to get the mulching kit for my MMM on my Max 26xl because I mow my own yard and a few others and would like a cleaner look than the typical blanket of long clippings everywhere when I’m done.
It was a wet season last year, so I had the clumping issue that NE Snowblower mentioned. The appearance and quality of the job are important, especially since I mow for others who want it to look nice all the time. I can’t recommend the mulching kit for full-time use unless you are cutting 1/4 of dry grass or you like mowi

Are all mulching blades the same?
Mulching blades have a curved design that does not provide the same lift and discharge power as standard blades, and using them on overgrown grass can result in clogging under the deck and piles of grass on the cut lawn. Mulching is also a green way to dispose of grass clippings.
Can you use regular blades with mulching kit?
Regular blades, on the other hand, do not chop clippings into small pieces like mulching blades do, and as a result, they do not work well on mulching mowers or standard mowers with a mulching kit installed, as the insufficiently chopped clippings clog the regular blades and the underside of the mower deck.
Is a mulching blade better?
When bagging, any blade should work, but a mulching blade should be used if you want finer pieces; most of the time, mulching your clippings is the best option. You should bag your clippings if the grass is tall, leaves are covering the lawn, or disease and weeds are spreading.
Are Gator blades better than mulching blades?
The high lift on a gator blade, unlike other mulching blades that push the grass down, draws the grass up, giving you a clean, even cut. While a mulching kit is recommended for a single blade deck, you will still get a much better mulching result with a Gator Blade without it.
Is side discharge better than mulching?
Mulching vs. Side Discharge Mower If you’re mowing large, open areas where you can direct cut grass back onto your lawn as fertilizer, side discharge is the best choice for lawn health. Mulching mowers are more specialized, work slower, and produce less pristine cuts than side discharge.
Is a mulching kit worth it?
A mulching kit will only work when the grass is dry or hasn’t grown much; if you expect the clippings to simply disappear, you should reconsider using one. Mulching kits work best with a smaller mower, such as a push mower, because you aren’t covering as much ground as quickly and the grass is chopped up much more.
What is the difference between high lift and mulching blades?
Mulching blades have a more curved style surface and frequently include extra cutting surfaces along the blade edges. Standard blades are also referred to as “2-in-1” (discharging and bagging) or “high-lift” blades (because they are designed to create a higher-lift airflow).
How often should mower blades be sharpened?
Most homeowners only need to sharpen blades twice per season: once at the start of the season and again around the middle of the mowing season. If you mow over debris such as sticks or rocks, however, you may need to sharpen your blades more frequently.
What’s the difference between mulching and mowing?
Mulching, on the other hand, cuts the grass to a finer degree so that it can act as mulch on the lawn. A mulching lawnmower eliminates the need to rake, bag, or otherwise dispose of grass clippings, but it doesn’t simply make the clippings vanish into thin air.
Why does my mulching mower leave clumps of grass?
If your mower leaves clumps of clippings all over the place, it means one of two things: you’re mowing when the grass is wet, or you’re letting the grass grow too long between mowings. Mow frequently enough that you never remove more than one-third of the grass blades in a single cutting.
Does wet grass dull mower blades?
Mowing a wet lawn can quickly dull the blade, so clean it thoroughly before and after to keep the cut as sharp as possible. Maintain your machine and sharpen mower blades on a regular basis to ensure a clean, healthy cut.
Do you sharpen mulching blades?
Mulching blades may have longer or curved cutting edges, and sharpening them may require several different types of files.
What is the advantage of Gator Blades?
Gator blades are designed to deliver finer, smaller grass clippings that fall through the cut grass and into the soil, where they break down faster and deliver nutrients to the soil, feeding and watering your lawn.
Are mulching blades louder?
If the ground is drier and not completely covered in dense grass, the mulching kit appears to be the “loudest” of all the setups, but it also produces the least amount of dust.
Do high lift blades cut better?
High-lift mower blades have deeper curves on the ends, which create enough suction to circulate and expel the clippings, and the higher air flow also helps prevent clogging when mowing tall or wet grass. Low-lift mower blades work well on dry, shorter grasses, while high-lift blades work better in ALL conditions.
