Ford Tractor Hydraulic System
So, how’s the weather? There’s a reason to talk about the weather; it affects everything. Do you park your tractor outside? Has the fluid been changed in over a year?
PHYSICAL DAMAGE
Straightening and repairing lift arms and other hardware is mostly a matter of time and effort; if someone has used bolts instead of pins, replace them with the proper hardware; a shop press is ideal, but a floor jack or bottle jack with a heavy chain can also help.
MOISTURE
Water in hydraulic fluid is very bad; even small amounts can cause control valves to stick, springs to break, or linkage to bend. Because water is heavier than oil, condensation runs down and collects at the bottom of your sump (where the pump is located). Crack a drain plug and turn it out about half a turn.
DIRT AND DEPOSITS
Even a lightly used tractor should have the fluid changed at least once a year because modern fluids are far superior to those available when the Operator’s manuals were written.
USE THE CORRECT FLUID
The most expensive option is NH-410B (M2C-134D) – but it’s also the best overall lubricant. Choose the right one for your tractors and budget. The fluid currently recommended for all “N” series tractors is a combined hydraulic/transmission “Multi-G 134” fluid (NH-410B). No warm-up required on cold winter days.
CHANGING THE HYDRAULIC FLUID
To completely drain the hydraulic system, you’ll need a container or shirt fabric that can hold about 5-gallons, as well as three drain plugs at each of the sump’s low points. Try to flush as much of the sludge out with the old fluid as possible. Flushing tractors with kerosene or diesel fuel can help remove dirt and debris from the hydraulic pump area.
CORRECT LEVEL
After draining the sump, tighten all three drain plugs, then remove the bottom bolt from the side inspection cover with the hydraulic dip-stick. It usually takes 4-1/4 to 4-3/4 gallons, not 5 as stated in the owner’s manual.
INTERNAL LEAKS
Small leaks tend to get bigger, but you should be able to judge if your leaks are bad enough to remove the top cover and fix them. A lift that raises slowly and won’t stay up when the engine stops could have blown gaskets, a cracked cylinder, or a rusted transfer pipe. Small leaks tend to get bigger, but you should be able to judge if your leaks are bad enough to remove the top cover and fix them.
PUMP PROBLEMS
Under load, a “chuckling” sound indicates worn eccentric cams, but the pump can make a lot of noise and still work fine. Shuddering on the upswing indicates one or more check valves in the pump are not sealing properly. Repair kits are available in various stages depending on what needs to be rebuilt.
LIFT CAPACITY
The 3-point lift will pick up a lot more weight close to the tractor than it will out on the end of a boom pole, and the front tires will start to come off the ground with about 800 pounds on the lift arms. It can be done, but I think that qualifies as abuse.

What oil goes in a tractor transmission?
Valvoline UTTO and UNITRAC are premium lubricants for tractor transmissions and other equipment. They are recommended for a variety of tractor components and have the approval of leading heavy-duty agricultural machinery and equipment manufacturers.
What kind of oil does a Ford 8N transmission take?
Ford specified mild EP gear conforming to Ford specs M4864A (SAE 80) for temperatures below freezing and M4864B (SAE 90) for temperatures above freezing for its 8N, which corresponds to the modern API gear oil designation of GL3.
What kind of hydraulic fluid does a Ford tractor use?
The Traveller TS40402G Ford Tractor All Mineral 90 Transmission Fluid is a premium hydraulic fluid for older Ford tractors.
Is tractor transmission fluid and hydraulic fluid the same?
Tractor fluids and hydraulic oils have different formulations and are used for different purposes; hydraulic oil transfers power, while tractor fluid lubricates the moving parts within a transmission.
What is the difference between hydraulic fluid and hydrostatic fluid?
u201cA hydraulic drive system is a quasi-hydrostatic drive or transmission system that uses pressurized hydraulic fluid to power hydraulic machinery, with the term hydrostatic referring to energy transfer from pressure differences rather than the kinetic energy of the flow.
Is hydraulic fluid all the same?
Hydraulic fluid can be made from conventional oil or synthetic stock, and it can also be glycol-based, a water/glycol mix, or almost entirely water in some applications.
What is 134D hydraulic fluid?
Multi G-134 hydraulic fluid is a multi-purpose fluid for hydraulic systems, wet brakes, various PTO clutch systems, differentials, and transmissions in farm tractors. It is a medium-duty oil with good anti-wear properties, and it creates a rust- and corrosion-resistant lubrication.
What is 90w mineral oil?
Phillips 66 sup>u00ae/sup> Transmission Oil SAE 90 is a SAE 90 mineral oil gear lubricant recommended for use in manual transmissions, transfer cases, and rear axle assemblies of automotive, farm, and off-highway equipment where an API GL-1 gear oil is specified by the manufacturer.
How much hydraulic fluid does a 9N tractor take?
What is the hydraulic fluid capacity of a Ford 9N? u201cFluid capacity is approx.
How do you check hydraulic fluid on a tractor?
To begin, remove the cap and pull the dipstick out to check the hydraulic fluid levels; then, clean the dipstick with the cloth and replace it inside; then, pull the dipstick out again and check the fluid levels that should be visible on the dipstick’s scale.
What kind of hydraulic fluid does a Ford Jubilee take?
It is Ford/New Holland approved practice to use Universal Transmission Fluid (UTF) equivalent to Ford/New Holland specification 134D in the transmission, hydraulic reservoir, and rear differential section.
Can you use transmission fluid in place of hydraulic fluid?
Yes, in most cases, automatic transmission fluid can be used instead of hydraulic fluid, as both of these formulas are designed to lubricate moving parts and act as coolants within their respective systems.
Can I put hydraulic fluid in my transmission?
Yes, hydraulic fluid can be used in the tranny.
Can you use transmission fluid for hydraulic system?
Engine oil, automatic transmission fluid, and hydraulic oil formulated specifically for the hydraulic compartment are all acceptable fluids for most hydraulic systems.
