The Best Small Farm Tractor Buyer’s Guide
Since the Farmall, manufacturers have developed new systems and unified many interfaces, so the best small farm tractors are robust, agile, dependable, and easily modified. Back in the day, a tractor was a tractor, but today there is a wide range of options available.
What’s The Hitch?
A three-point hitch is the interface we use to attach implements to the back of a tractor. For our purposes, we need to know the differences between Cat-0 (category zero), Cat-1, and Cat-2 (there are more categories, but these are the sizes that apply to small farmers and homesteaders). All of these hitches have different pin, hitch arm, and top link dimensions.
Tractors have long used gear and clutch-style transmissions, and many experienced operators prefer them. Today, however, the majority of tractors sold have hydrostatic transmissions, which both simplify and complicate the act of motivating a tractor, especially if you’re used to a clutch.
Tractor manufacturers now offer a variety of sizes of tractors, which are typically grouped by u201cclass.u201d These classes are designed with a specific customer in mind, so the ability, power, options, and price points vary accordingly. Generally speaking, all tractor manufacturers offer a sub-compact, compact, mid-size, and full-size class range.
Sub-compact tractors are at the bottom of the power curve and are (generally speaking) a lawn tractor on steroids. Due to their size, most sub-compact tractors today are compatible with front-end loaders, but with load limits of 500 lbs or less at the bucket, they qualify as self-propelled wheelbarrows.
Compact tractors are a small step up from sub-compact tractors. They come with Cat-0 or Cat-1 hitches, and a four-cylinder diesel engine is standard, which is good news. All compact tractors I’ve seen are compatible with reasonably robust bucket loaders.
Mid-size tractors offer more versatility, flexibility, horsepower, and conveniences than smaller compact and sub-compact tractors, such as cab options and remote hydraulic controls. Mid-sized tractors will come with a Cat-1 hitch at a minimum, with many manufacturers offering a Cat-2 hitch with towed equipment.
If you have a large farm with large implements, I doubt you’re reading this article, but if you are, you’ll need a tractor from the git-er-done class of full-size tractors, which start around 80 horsepower and go as big as you can imagine, plus some. If you need something in this category, be prepared to pay a lot of money for the real deal.
