Tractor transmissions have come a long way since the days of double-clutching and crunching your way between gears; modern tractor drivetrains handle power more efficiently and are far easier to use; most new tractors over 100hp have either powershift gearboxes or CVTs.
How does a powershift work?
A powershift effectively transfers the engine’s power to the drive axles using friction plates, allowing manufacturers to offer multiple ranges and speeds. Most modern powershifts also have a fully automatic feature, where the machine selects the appropriate gear based on pre-set parameters.
How does a CVT work?
A CVT is a planetary gear system that connects hydraulic and mechanical drives. A ZF cPower CVT transmission in a loading shovel has been shown to save significant fuel over a conventional powershift transmission. The ring gear is likened to the wheel in the air because it has the least resistance.
Powershift vs CVT – what are the pros and cons?

CVTs can improve productivity and fuel efficiency by up to 25% by running engines at a lower and more consistent rpm. CVTs also operate in a very narrow and efficient power range, or “sweet spot,” during operation. Fendt’s latest high-horsepower stepless box uses hydraulic motors.
Growing market share
According to John Deere statistics, CVTs are now specified in about one-third of its mid-sized 6R-series sales, with the proportion even higher for higher horsepower models. New Holland’s double-clutch powershift is available on all T6s and the Case Max.
Operational lifespan
CVT transmissions have been known to last up to 30,000 hours on a loading shovel, whereas powershift transmissions have a shorter operational lifespan because the clutchplates used to shift through the gears in a powershift are subject to wear.
How does a PowerShift transmission work?
Shifting into second gear disengages the first clutch, engages the second clutch, and engages the gear cogs of third gear; this advanced gearbox pre-selects the next gear for you so you don’t lose power when you change; and shifting into third gear disengages the first clutch, engages the second clutch, and engages the gear cogs of third gear.
What is power shuttle on a tractor?
