History

Tractor Supply began as a mail-order tractor parts company in 1938, and the first retail store opened in 1939 in Minot, North Dakota. From 1998 to 2002, George Strait served as the company’s spokesman. Tractor Supply is headquartered in Brentwood, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville.
Products
Tractor Supply has thirteen product categories on its website [7], five of which are major product categories: livestock and pet products, which accounted for 47 percent of the company’s sales in 2020.[2] Hardware, tools, truck and towing products, which accounted for 21 percent of sales, and seasonal products such as lawn and garden equipment, gifts, and tractors accounted for the remaining 19 percent of sales.
Marketing
Tractor Supply’s mission statement is “to work hard, have fun, and make money by providing legendary service and great products at everyday low prices.”[8] The company has run advertising campaigns with the slogan “The Stuff You Need Out Here.”
Acquisitions and subsidiaries
TSC was part of a group (which included four liquidation firms) that bought some of the leases from the bankrupt Quality Stores, Inc.,[9] a Michigan-based company that had over 300 stores in 30 states under the name CT Farm at one time.
Maternity litigation
Former employee Melissa Douglas filed a lawsuit alleging that the company violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by refusing to offer her modified work duties while she was pregnant.
TSC Stores L.P. (Canada)
TSC opened its first Canadian location in London, Ontario, in November 1966. The Canadian stores have not been affiliated with Tractor Supply Company’s U.S. operation since 1987, when the American parent company sold these locations to Birch Hill Equity Partners Management Inc., a Toronto-based investment firm, and current owners Peavey Industries LP are phasing them out.
