Point contacts that do not strike square and straight will quickly burn and pit. A small pair of needle nose pliers can be used to bend/twist the fixed contact to align the points.
CAP and ROTOR
Check the end terminal of the rotor and the spark plug terminals inside the cap for dirt, moisture, or carbon tracking. Buy a new cap and rotor from the same place to have a better chance of getting a good quality set.
CONDENSER
Check the terminal for the condenser wire and where the points connect to the coil carefully for a slight bulge on one side and a matching dimple, which is normal for a set that has been run for a while.
FILING POINT CONTACTS
Point contacts used to be made of a Tungsten alloy, but later bonded point contacts appeared, which had a small amount of tungsten material welded to a less expensive base material. Filing and polishing them with a proper set of point files should restore the contact surfaces to like new condition.
